Every autumn a deep, raw bellow carries across the Veluwe: the roaring of red deer stags. The rut is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the Netherlands. This guide explains when the rut happens, where to experience it and how to watch without disturbing the animals.

When is the rut?

The rut of the red deer runs roughly from mid-September to mid-October. It usually peaks in late September and early October. The exact timing depends on the weather: after a cool, clear night the stags are often at their most active.

WhenWhat happens
Early SeptemberDeer gather; the first roars are heard
Late September – early OctoberPeak: lots of roaring, posturing and the occasional fight
Mid-OctoberThe rut fades; the stags are exhausted

What happens during the rut?

The rut is the mating season of the red deer. Mature stags gather a group of hinds and defend it against rivals. With their deep call, the roar, they show how strong they are. Usually that is enough and the weaker stag backs off. Sometimes it comes to a real fight, with antlers clashing hard. A stag barely eats during these weeks and can lose a lot of weight.

Where can you experience the rut?

The Veluwe is the largest and best-known area in the Netherlands to see red deer. Several wildlife observation points let you watch the animals from a fixed spot without disturbing them. Well-known places include:

  • De Hoge Veluwe National Park: large open terrain with viewing spots; check the park’s opening hours.
  • Wildlife observation points of Natuurmonumenten and Staatsbosbeheer, such as at Planken Wambuis and Hoog Buurlo.
  • Guided rut excursions with a ranger: often your best chance, because the guide knows where the deer are.

Tip: check the land manager’s website before you set off. Some areas are (partly) closed during the rut or only accessible on a guided walk.

Tips for your visit

Best timeAround sunrise and the hour before sunset
WeatherA cool, calm, clear evening is ideal
BringBinoculars, warm clothing in muted colours, perhaps a thermos
BehaviourStay on the paths and at the observation points, keep quiet and keep dogs on a lead

Other animals have a rut too

The red deer is not the only one. The fallow deer ruts in October and November, a little later than the red deer; the buck then makes a deep, rattling groan. The roe deer is the odd one out: its rut is already in July and August. And for the wild boar the mating season falls in late autumn and winter.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the rut

When is the rut on the Veluwe?

From roughly mid-September to mid-October, usually peaking in late September and early October.
